MEETINGS:

  • Housing Solutions Board meets the 3rd Friday of each month at 10am at Summit Pointe, 140 West Michigan Ave, Battle Creek, MI.
  • Homeless Coalition meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 12pm at  United Way of BCKZ, 34 West Jackson Street, Battle Creek, MI.
  • Hunger Free Calhoun-Homeless meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 1:00pm at United Way BCKZ after the Homeless Coalition Meeting 
  • HMIS User/ Data Quality workgroup meets the 3rd Tuesday every other month at 10:30am via Webinar set up by MCAH.
  • IST (Interagency Service Team) workgroup meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 11am at The SHARE Center, 120 Grove Street, Battle Creek, MI.
  • Veteran’s Resource workgroup meets monthly, please contact Vicky Clark at vc2@summitpointe.org

What Is PIT?

  • A count of ‘Unsheltered’ (on the street, vehicle, hand-built structure) homeless
  • A count of homeless persons that are ‘Sheltered’ (shelters, transitional housing)
  • An in-depth, personal interview with unsheltered persons

When

  • Unsheltered Count: January 2019 
  • Sheltered Count: Same time – Completed with service/shelter providers
  • Interviews/Surveys: January 2019

Background

  • The project is mandated for all communities by HUD
  • Counts take place across the country at the end of January
  • We partner with the affiliated agencies of the MI-514 Calhoun County/Battle Creek Continuum of Care

Why We Count People. 
 Because there are…1190 Literally homeless in Calhoun County
Break down:
 214 Seniors (age 55+) literally homeless, 17.7%
205 Veterans literally homeless, 17.23%
381 persons in families literally homeless, 32%;  66% of those households are female single parents; so 2/3 of literally homeless families are single female parents

  • Results leads to local, State and Federal funds for local agencies
  • Point in Time data leads to targeted services
  • Knowledge. To provide agencies with important data on our homeless population – critical for federal and state grant applications
  • Awareness of the scope and the details of the problem provide the knowledge needed to act
  • Ending homelessness benefits EVERYONE!
